So now that the season is officially over for the Vikings, its time to look at some ideas on how they can start to turn this miserable franchise around.

They got the first step correct by giving Brad Childress a nice long permanent vacation. What clown they bring in to take over next is a matter for another post.

If the Vikings hope to earn their first Super Bowl championship, they are going to need to find a long term solution at QB. Look at the sorry bunch that the Vikings have started at the position in the last 10 years: Brett Favre, Gus Ferotte, Tavaris Jackson, Brad Johnson, Daunte Culpepper, Jeff George(yes, THAT Jeff George). You know what you have in Tavaris Jackson (pssst…not much) and its clear the Jackson experiment is a failure and Favre is obviously done. At this point in the year, there are two options left: continue to start Favre or see what the rookie Joe Webb has.

You can make the case that sticking with Favre is, even with the way he has played this year, still a better QB option than a rookie with 0 regular season games played. You have a new coach in Leslie Frazier that is playing for a job and you know he wants to make the best of the opportunity and field the best team possible and it can be argued that Favre does just that. I wouldn’t really blame him.

But if the Vikings had any balls, they would bench Favre and try to use this unfortunate situation to their advantage the best way that they can. Start Joe Webb. The 6th round pick out of Alabama-Birmingham was switched from QB to WR by the Vikings during the preseason. What they found was that this kid had raw talent and a huge arm. So huge that they switched him BACK to QB to start the year. So now they have an opportunity to see what kind of talent the kid has and with that knowledge they can then make a better decision in the offseason and with the draft. And what better way than to put him out there against real live NFL teams. If he completely tanks, then who cares?? At least you know where you stand with him. But if he shows some glimmer of hope, then you might not need to use your first or second round pick on a QB. They won’t be using their 3rd round pick, thats for sure.

Starting Joe Webb makes sense for the long term success of the team, which is why we can forget about it.
